Having interviewed several women about their Biggest Confidence Challenge, I found that the 2 biggest confidence challenges that were mentioned were:
- DISSATISFACTION WITH THEIR BODY, (especially moms)
- OTHER PEOPLE’S OPINIONS
Of course, this didn’t come as a great surprise. We can all relate to some degree. But when reading through a spreadsheet and line after line is words of self-loathing, disempowerment and discontent, somehow the black and white cold, hard truth of those words seem harsher than a floaty, general idea.
Unfortunately, this is not a new problem that Women face, in fact, it’s an age-old problem that’s grown to epic proportions thanks to the Digital age in which we live. Thanks to the internet and social media, the problem has become even more pervasive as we are constantly connected to a stream of idealistic imagery of what other’s are up to and how perfect it all appears.
But that’s just it. It’s all appearances. We know this. We know that we only see the refined, polished parts of other people’s lives, but that doesn’t make it any easier not to compare ourselves with them.
Thankfully though, there’s always two sides to a coin. The other side of this particular coin is that we are starting to see an emergence of more authenticity. People being real about themselves, their lives and their struggles. Women sharing their so-called Imperfections and mom’s sharing their very real challenges and insecurities with motherhood. I believe that this revolution of realness has come about because people have had enough of the super gleaned façade of perfection we’ve been fed over the years.
It’s time to get real. It’s time to celebrate that realness. If you’re a new mom, or even a well-experienced mom, it’s time to wear your amazing, life-giving body as a badge of honour. It’s something to be proud of, it’s something to admire. Your body is Healthy and Strong enough to bring a whole new human into this world. That’s an astonishing physical feat, and you did it! Your Battle Scars are the reminders of this physical achievement, a reminder of what you’ve accomplished. So stop berating and belittling your wonderful body and start choosing to see it as the magnificent gift that it is.
Like these moms who took part in the #CTConfidence campaign last year. They shared their biggest confidence challenges, and they chose to stand up and name their Body Confidence issues, and to declare their commitment to changing their negative thoughts and behaviors towards their bodies. That’s what it’s all about – your choices. How you choose to see yourself. What you choose to let other’s opinions mean. You can decide how you feel about yourself. You can decide whether to do something to change that, and you can decide what to accept. The choice is yours.
You’ll find that when you start to make these kinds of choices part of who you are, other people’s opinions become irrelevant. So what will you choose today?
